Japanese operator Kansai Airports has commissioned a new solar power generation facility known as Sora x Solar

According to Kansai Airports, the solar plant has the largest power generation capacity of any airport in Japan. Power generated power will be used in airport facilities, including terminal buildings, the operator said.

Effective February 1, Sora x Solar will start generating and supplying power to terminal buildings at Kansai International Airport (KIX) and Osaka Itami Airport (ITAMI). 39,740 and 960 solar panels have been installed at KIX and ITAMI, respectively, via an on-site power purchase agreement (PPA) scheme where electricity producers install photovoltaic power generation facilities on the premises of customers (electricity users) at the expense of the electricity producers, own and maintain them, and supply electricity generated from the fa-cilities to the customers.

The introduction of renewable energy through the project is an important initiative for achieving Kansai Airports’ 2030 reduction target of greenhouse gas emissions (50% reduction from 2016 levels), and the project is expected to reduce Kansai Airports Group’s CO2 emissions by approximately.

The project will contribute to achieving the goals of the KIX Decarbonisation Promotion Plan 4 and ITAMI Decarbonisation Promotion Plan 4 , which were approved by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in December 2023. Going forward, Kansai Airports Group will continue to actively pursue innovative initiatives to reduce environmental impact in the aviation and airport sectors.
