The collaboration between Rio de Janeiro’s Tom Jobim International Airport (Galeão) and Brazilian air mobility start-up Micaelis signifies a huge step for AAM in South America

The new partners aim to conduct autonomous test flights of eVTOLs (electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles) to and from the airport. They will also install an integrated vertiport at Galeão, ultimately optimising the passenger and cargo journey between the airport terminal and the new vertiport.

According to Micaelis, the benefits will be threefold: the implementation of zero-emission air mobility solutions aligns with global carbon reduction goals; the integration of eVTOL services will significantly enhance the airport’s connectivity to the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area, and the development of an app to manage passenger and cargo flows will elevate the travel experience.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with RIOgaleão on this visionary project that will not only revolutionise urban transportation but also set new standards for sustainable aviation in Brazil and beyond,” said Vincent Kieffer, co-CEO of Micaelis.

This memorandum of understanding (MoU), initially set for 24 months, marks a major mile-stone in the evolution of airport infrastructure and urban mobility in Brazil, positioning Rio de Janeiro at the forefront of innovation in sustainable air transportation, according to the partners.
