The Danish government has agreed to acquire a controlling stake in the operator of Copenhagen Airport, a strategic move which it is hoped will bolster Denmark’s aviation infrastructure and global connectivity.
The state plans to increase its share in Københavns Lufthavne A/S by 59.4% to 98%, a decision which aligns with Denmark's long-term ambitions to ensure the airport's development as a major international hub. Copenhagen Airport is a key gateway to Northern Europe, facilitating both passenger and cargo transport, and serves as a hub for Scandinavian Airlines (SAS). By securing a majority stake, the government aims to oversee significant investment and improvements in the airport’s facilities and operations. The state purchase is part of a broader strategy to enhance national infrastructure while ensuring alignment between public interests and the airport's future direction.
SAS described the decision as a “significant and forward-looking move that will strengthen Denmark's infrastructure and connectivity”. SAS President and CEO Anko van der Werff said: “This is a crucial step for Danish and Scandinavian connectivity. Strengthening Copenhagen Airport as a global hub requires close collaboration between all stakeholders, and we warmly welcome the Danish State’s decision as it will facilitate the necessary alignment for stronger Scandinavian connectivity.”
