Hongqiao and Pudong international airports in Shanghai are the latest to install solutions from Belgium-headquartered ADB Safegate.

Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA), a leader in innovation and artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) best practices in China, has chosen ADB Safegate’s advanced technologies to improve daily operations. SHA will use ADB Safegate AI-powered solutions coupled with ML algorithms to improve its apron efficiency, stand usage and passenger experience at reduced operational costs.

While enhancing its previously installed Airport Operational Database/Resource Management System (AODB/RMS), ADB Safegate built a new prediction model applying advanced AI/ML techniques and data analytics which will help calculate an aircraft’s ETA and pre-allocate flight stands. It will reduce unreasonable stand adjustments and improve the airbridge usage rate, lowering overall security risks caused by flight conflicts, the company said.

We have built an evaluation mechanism of ground operation efficiency through intelligent data analysis

Prior to the COVID pandemic, SHA was facing multiple operational challenges – from increased flight traffic and crowded aprons to providing improved services to passengers while maintaining safety. Accommodating new flights looked unlikely due to limited resources, which was leading to increased costs and constrained airport revenue.

“As an in-house vendor serving SHA for more than 15 years, we understand its operational challenges,” said Peng Guan, vice-president, China at ADB Safegate.

“With operating pressure increasing, airports must make full use of limited resources. We have built an evaluation mechanism of ground operation efficiency through intelligent data analysis that has improved the allocation of stand resources, resulting in the capability to manage, and even accommodate, more flights. Digital technologies are playing a key role in optimising the operational efficiency of airports and we hope to continue to build long-term partnerships with customers in the region to support their transformation on this path.”

Since the upgrade, more than 80% of stand allocation operations can be completed automatically

Pudong deploys ADB Safegate solutions

Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), ranked first among mainland China airports in cargo and second in passenger throughput, has chosen ADB Safegate to enhance its installed Airport Operational Database/Resource Management System ADOB/RMS.

While upgrading the AODB/RMS, a key task is to enhance the rule base for operation resource allocation. More than 17,000 stand rules along with operational data in the original system were comprehensively and systematically sorted and updated with clear logic architecture. In addition, the data fields related to flight operation in AODB have been fully opened for the flexible rules setup to meet the complex and dynamic operation requirements.

“With the help of ADB Safegate, a large number of rules and operational data has been sorted and updated, which directly improves the efficiency and optimises the effect of the operation resource allocation. Since the upgrade, more than 80% of stand allocation operations can be completed automatically by the RMS (previously around 20%). Streamlining stand operations has reduced the time devoted by staff – from three hours to only one hour,” said Leng Yikai, project manager at PVG ITC.
