The City of Philadelphia Department of Aviation has appointed a new deputy director of internal audit and compliance.
The department, which operates Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and Northeast Philadelphia Airport (PNE), has revealed Konstantinos “Gus” Tsakos as its new deputy director of internal audit and compliance. Tsakos was most recently deputy executive director for the Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Cooperation Authority (PICA), a state oversight agency for the City of Philadelphia, responsible for reviewing and considering the City’s annual five-year financial and strategic plan.
Prior to PICA, Tsakos served as deputy director for finance for the Division (now Department) of Aviation. “We are thrilled to have Gus back at the airports,” said PHL chief financial officer Tracy Borda. “He has extensive experience conducting a variety of audits and will be a great asset as the airport continues its post-COVID-19 recovery.”
For the Department of Aviation, Tsakos oversees the Airport’s Audit Unit and is responsible for developing and implementing an effective internal audit function that provides objective assurance and internal consulting services designed to add value and improve airport operations. He leads a team of auditors responsible for annually complying with federal mandated audit requirements, ensuring vendor and concessionaire contract compliance, conducting internal control reviews of airport operations, and coordinating responses to financial statement and Single Audit opinion audits.
Tsakos began his professional career in the City of Philadelphia’s Office of the Controller where he was the audit director and responsible for leading and conducting numerous financial statement opinion audits, compliance audits, performance audits and departmental audits on both the City of Philadelphia and the School District of Philadelphia, as well as the opinion on the City’s five-year financial plan. A certified public accountant and a chartered global management accountant, Tsakos is a graduate of Temple University’s Fox School of Business, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
