In a UK airport first, members of the local community are working with West Midlands Police to help keep Birmingham Airport safe.

The West Midlands Police Streetwatch scheme will see a group of volunteers work alongside the airport policing team to help protect the airport and those visiting it. The group will undertake regular walkabouts in public access areas, West Midlands Police said.

Inspector Colin Gallier of Birmingham Airport Police said: “It’s great to see enthusiastic members of the community coming together and giving up their own time to keep our airport safe.

“Having extra eyes and ears to help us keep everyone safe is another great tactic that also helps us prevent crime. It sends a strong message out to potential criminals that they are not welcome at our airport.”

“Birmingham Airport Streetwatch is a great way of using the observation skills of local aviation enthusiasts (and residents) to help keep the airport safe and secure. We have always had a good relationship with the airport policing team and this is a logical development of that.”
