Al Bateen Executive Airport in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, has reopened following the completion of a major refurbishment project.
Carried out in under 90 days, the work involved the resurfacing and widening of the existing 3.2km runway to accommodate wide-body aircraft. A substantial new boundary wall was added, while ground lighting and signage were upgraded. The refurbishment of the airfield ground lighting means that the airport is now entitled to operate Code 4D aircraft.
More than 105,000 tons of asphalt were used on over 240,000m2 of runway, shoulder areas and taxiways, and 23km of cable were laid, in addition to the installation of 15.5km of ducts and over 400 new manholes.
Close cooperation between the General Civil Aviation Authority and Abu Dhabi Airports ensured the highest level of compliance, and all necessary approvals were received without delay, the airport operator said.
“Over 800 dedicated personnel were involved in this project. As the only dedicated executive airport in the Middle East, we are committed to providing our customers with a safe and secure facility that caters to their requirements,” said Frank McCrorie, chief operations officer, Abu Dhabi Airports.
