Schiphol Plaza, the shopping space before passport control at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, has unveiled its first self-service shop, Gate 24/7.
Consisting of ten vending machines, each of them offering a different product range, Gate 24/7 sources its stock from eight retailers already represented on Schiphol Plaza.
As its name implies, the shop is open 24 hours a day. Visitors can find all kinds of items there, from food and drink to beauty products, and from electronics to last-minute necessities. Customers can select their choice and pay contactless at the vending machines.
“Schiphol closely follows technological developments in retail. We believe that this is the future. The priority is to offer our visitors speed and convenience, and this new shop and service responds to that in a way that is accessible for our visitors and partners,” said Carla Laurs-Hoogvorst, retail manager at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
Schiphol previously tested a similar concept: the digital Albert Heijn shop on Jan Dellaertplein, which proved popular with travellers. The Gate 24/7 pilot will last at least six months. Schiphol will then evaluate the results and decide whether or not to extend the pilot.
Gate 24/7 was constructed in collaboration with Intos Interior Design and DGA Vending.
