Both runways at Berlin Brandenburg Airport will be in simultaneous use once again from December 1, following eight months of rotational use.
The decision to operate the runways at the same time was made to ensure stable flight operations during winter weather conditions. If there is snow and ice at the hub, one runway can now be cleared while the other is still in use.
Between 3,000 and 4,600 flight movements were recorded from December 2020 to March 2021, and airport operator FBB is expecting at least double the number of take-offs and landings to take place during the same period this winter.
Aletta von Massenbach, CEO at Berlin Brandenburg, said: “Using just one runway in the past months was necessary from a business and operational perspective. We were able to reduce our expenditure, yet still manage a growing number of flight movements since the summer. Looking to the winter months, but especially in view of the increase in passenger numbers forecast for the year ahead, we are now using both runways again.
“Using two runways at once also ensures more stable winter flight operations, more routine processes for staff, and thus a return to some sort of airport normality.”
The night flight regulations remain in force with no change, and the FBB aircraft noise measurement programme will be adjusted according to the parallel use of the two runways.
