As the much-delayed Berlin Brandenburg Airport (IATA: BER) is set to be commissioned, the city’s Schönefeld Airport (SXF) will become Terminal 5 of the new BER. SXF will receive the BER IATA code on October 25, when the new winter flight schedule begins.
In preparation for meeting the standards of the new airport, Schönefeld has undergone several infrastructure renovations, including the introduction of new security control technology and a passenger guidance system. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, CEO of the airport’s operating company, Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg, commented: “As the new Terminal 5, Schönefeld Airport will be an inherent part of the BER. As a result of the construction work, passengers can still be processed well at T5 for a few years. This means flight operations can be staggered under coronavirus conditions.”
The terminal sections at Schönefeld have worn the new markings ‘K, L, M and Q’ since the end of March to avoid the duplication of names when all sections of BER are operational. The guidance system at SXF already bears the BER colour scheme. With the changeover of the three-letter code, the large lettering on the roof will also be replaced and will read ‘BER Terminal 5’ in future.
