Ivar C Satero, director of San Francisco International Airport since 2016, is to retire at the end of 2024, he has announced

“It has been my honour to lead such an amazing SFO team for the past eight years,” said Satero. “I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished together in our mission to deliver an airport where our passengers, our people and our planet come first.

“The SFO team has inspired me throughout my career, as we’ve challenged ourselves and our industry to serve our passengers in an extraordinary way, to be bold and innovative in our environmental accountability, and to care for and support our people, recognizing that the key to SFO’s success will always be its dedicated employees. I leave confident that SFO will continue to deliver exceptional results for our passengers, the City & County of San Francisco, and our Bay Area region.”

A search for the next SFO airport director will be conducted in the coming months, during which time Satero will remain in his position and oversee the transition to new leadership.

Ivar C Satero began his service with the City & County of San Francisco in 1984 as an engineering intern and was subsequently hired as a mechanical engineer for San Francisco Public Works and Public Utilities.

Satero’s career with the airport began in 1994, as program manager of transit, managing the AirTrain and BART projects in the airport’s $3bn Master Plan Expansion. In 2003, Satero was appointed deputy airport director for the Design & Construction Division overseeing capital development, including Terminal 2 and the new air traffic control tower. In April 2014, Satero was appointed chief operating officer, with responsibility for Operations & security; information technology & telecommunications; facilities maintenance; planning, design & construction; and the implementation of SFO’s $7.4bn capital programme. He was appointed airport director in July 2016.
