Effective May 1, 2025, an Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) and Lagardère Travel Retail joint venture (JV) will drive a retail renewal at the Dutch hub

An existing decade-long contract between Schiphol Airport Retail (SAR) and Gebr. Heinemann expires on April 20, 2025, with the work of the new JV – which represents a strengthening of ties between Schiphol and Lagardère – beginning the following day.

The move is just the latest in a series designing to develop the AMS retail offering. Schiphol became the owner of airport retailer Kappé earlier this year. Combining the stores of Kappé and SAR in this new joint venture will create opportunities to improve the layout and appearance of these locations. The new JV partners will comprehensively redevelop Schiphol’s duty-free shopping offer beyond airport security.

Also earlier this year, Schiphol invited retail parties to compete for a ten-year strategic partnership for the perfume & cosmetics, sunglasses, tobacco, liquor and chocolate categories. After an intensive selection process, Lagardère was chosen.

Under the new JV, Lagardère Travel Retail has 70% of the shares and Schiphol 30%.

“The expansion of the cooperation with Lagardère Travel Retail is a very important moment for Schiphol in the implementation of our new retail strategy. With our intensive investment programme over the next few years, we aim to restore Schiphol's magic and iconic status as a leading airport.” said Arthur Reijnhart, executive director Schiphol Commercial.

“With Lagardère Travel Retail, we have found a partner with whom we will transform our duty-free stores into beautiful locations with a modern assortment, appealing prices and attractive appearance. The goal is to exceed the expectations of our passengers, and we are convinced that together with Lagardère Travel Retail we can.”

The transaction is subject to approval by competition authorities and advice from the works councils of Kappé, SAR and Schiphol.
