The initiative is part of CAK’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability. The Ohio airport currently has 96 hives on property that are home to over six million bees.
“The 1946 Honeybee Co name honours the year our airport was dedicated, reflecting our deep connection to the region,” said Ren Camacho, Akron-Canton Airport president and CEO. “This effort aligns with our mission to be good stewards of the region and to support the wellbeing of the community we serve.”
CAK’s Environmental Services team ensures the health of colonies around the airfield, while providing a safe environment for the pollinators to thrive. Harvesting is one component of their maintenance that typically takes place in late summer.
“To date, we’ve bottled roughly 15 gallons through 3oz and 8oz offerings,” said Adam Dietry, assistant manager of Environmental Services. “We appreciate the support of the surrounding community as we continue to learn more about these pollinators.”
Travellers now have the opportunity to purchase the honey at the Observation Deck Restaurant. The 3oz jar retails for $8 and the 8oz jar for $15. Nearly 90% of the sales will return to Environmental Services with the goal of operating the initiative in a self-sustaining manner.
“We look forward to expanding our programming as we gain expertise, while sharing our learned experiences with the community,” said Scott Hostler, manager of Environmental Services. “The honey taste delicious and we can’t wait for others to try it.”
Those not planning to travel can try the honey through CAK’s Guest Pass Program. This al-lows members of the public to shop, dine, or experience amenities on the post-security side of the airport where the Observation Deck restaurant is located.
