The Indian airport is being developed at a cost of Rs.350 crores ($42.7m)and will be suitable for the operation of A-321/B-737 aircraft.

The development work includes an extension of the existing runway from 1,500 X 30m to 2,200 x 45m for the operation of Code-C type aircraft, construction of an interim terminal building, an ATC (air traffic control) tower, a fire station, car parking facilities, a new apron with space for three Code-C aircraft, and associated city-side and airside infrastructure.

The 6,250m2 interim terminal building will be able to handle up to 300 passengers per hour. Facilities include eight check-in counters, three conveyor belts (one in Departures and two in the Arrival Hall), parking for 75 cars and two bus parking spaces. The airport will be PRM (passenger with reduced mobility) compliant.

 

Sustainability features in the new terminal

The terminal building will be equipped with various sustainability features, among them a double insulated roofing system, canopies for energy saving, LED lighting, low heat-gain double glazing, and a rainwater harvesting system to help recharge the groundwater table. The airport will also have landscaping with fountains, water and sewage treatment plants, and will use recycled water for landscaping. A solar power plant with a 250kWp capacity has been installed.

Showcasing local culture

The terminal has been designed to integrate the culture and heritage of Ayodhya, in the State of Uttar Pradesh, creating a sense of place for the visitors.

The façade (both on the city side and airside) will echo the design of the Ram Mandir, a Hindu temple being built in Ayodhya. The terminal will also feature shikharas (towers associated with Hindu temple architecture) of varying heights to convey a sense of grandeur. Decorative columns will show local art, paintings and murals showing the life cycle of Bhagwan Sri Ram, an incarnation of Vishnu, one of the three most important Hindu gods.
