Within three months of the last module being transported across runways and taxiways, the Department of Aviation constructed approximately 21,000 sq ft of additional boarding-level space in Concourse D. The sections will now accommodate the newest aircraft design group (ADG) III, such as the Boeing 737 Max and Airbus 321 Neo. All work was completed behind construction barriers.
Just one of the construction projects being undertaken in and around ATL this year, D Widening involved 200 tradespeople working on-site. The six new gates can now each handle up to 190 passengers per flight. The gates have been turned over to Delta Air Lines.
Phase 2 of the project is already underway, with construction of the next five modules taking place at the Modular Yard. These are due to be transported to Concourse D in January 2025.
Work at Concourse D for Phase 2 began on September 6 with the closure of seven existing ADG II gates. This will enable teams to begin necessary foundation and civil work. Phase 2 will be completed by the end of 2025.
