One of Amsterdam Schiphol's runways will be closed to arriving and departing aircraft for two weeks later this month to allow for maintenance work to be carried out.
The Oostban landing strip at the hub is mostly used for small, business and private aircraft and those involved with ambulance, coastguard or government operations. It is scheduled to close from September 18 until October 1.
During the two-week period of maintenance, air traffic will make more frequent use of the Buitenveldertbaan Runway as well as the airport's other runways.
The Schiphol-Oostbaan runway condition will be assessed before undergoing possible works to the asphalt and markings. In addition, the cabling and electrics will be checked, lights cleaned or repaired, and the grass around the runway cut. The rainwater drainage system will also be inspected and where necessary flushed out. These works are being carried out in collaboration with construction company Heijmans. Schiphol said annual maintenance is carried out on all its runways to ensure they remain in good condition.
