Edinburgh Airport is set to introduce Deep Turnaround to optimise aircraft turnaround and minimise delays
Edinburgh Airport is set to introduce Deep Turnaround, a cutting-edge AI-based system developed by Aviation Solutions, a Schiphol Group subsidiary, to optimise aircraft turnaround and minimise delays. The system, scheduled to go live by early 2025, aims to enhance operational efficiency and passenger experiences by improving coordination among airport stakeholders. Deep Turnaround uses artificial intelligence, machine learning, and camera systems on the airport apron to monitor over 30 specific turnaround activities, including refuelling and boarding. The technology provides real-time updates on ground handling processes, enabling airport staff to anticipate and address delays up to 40 minutes before the scheduled departure time. This proactive approach not only reduces delays but also allows for better resource allocation and decision-making. In addition to live updates, the system archives historical data, simplifying performance analysis and helping the airport refine its processes. The rollout will initially cover multiple stands, forming part of Edinburgh’s broader digital strategy to modernise its operations.
Peter Barnes, head of business transformation at Edinburgh Airport, said: "Innovation is a key part of our approach at Edinburgh Airport, and using AI to help improve our turnaround times is something we are very excited about. Deep Turnaround’s systems and use of technology have the potential to make our operations even more efficient, and we look forward to collaborating with our colleagues to bring this to fruition.”
Caroline Massart, director of aviation solutions, added: “The right insights provided by data help make airport operations more predictable. We're collaborating with multiple airports on Deep Turnaround, and we’re very proud and excited to add Edinburgh to our community of users.”
